Last week, visiting some exhibitions in Rome, I came across these contact sheets exposed to the Pink Floyd show. These are the contact sheets, taken from the slides, of the famous cover of the album “Wish you were here” of 1975. The caption at the side explains how Powell, the author of the shots, has asked the stunts to ignite themeselves for 15 consecutive times before reaching the desired shot. Imagining a same set today would be something far-fetched for both today’s shooting techniques and for powerful digital post-production media. Thinking of the post-produced images that overwhelm us every day, I think of how less romantic they are compared to those old slides.
